Getting a tow truck after an accident

If you need a tow truck after an accident then you have the right to decide where your vehicle will be towed to and who will tow your vehicle. You can contact anyone prior to signing the authorisation form (for assistance on the right place to tow your vehicle), and you can receive a copy of the towing authorisation form.

Even if police do not attend, it's your responsibility as owner/driver to report it to them immediately and authorise the tow truck driver to tow your vehicle by signing a Towing Authorisation Form. 

If you can't do this, e.g. you are injured, a police officer or authorised officer will organise it for you.

The tow truck driver must have an accredited driver certificate and it's your responsibility to ensure they have this.

All tow trucks in NSW have a number plate with four digits ending in TT, e.g. 1234-TT.

If your vehicle is covered by a comprehensive insurance policy the towing fee might be covered. If the accident is not your fault then you will be able to claim the costs back from the other party. It's sensible for you to take photos of your vehicle before it's towed, if possible.
