Regulatory road signs tell you something you can’t do (e.g. no left turn), a specific restriction (e.g. a speed limit), something you can do (e.g. a u-turn is permitted but not compulsory), or something you must do (e.g. give way). Following is a non-exhaustive sampling of Australia’s regulatory signs from across the country.
Speed restrictions
Speed restriction signs indicate a maximum speed limit on that road either as a blanket limit or within time restrictions.
Directional restrictions
Directional restrictions tell traffic whether they must turn or proceed in a certain direction
Parking and stopping restrictions
Parking restrictions vary from state-to-state. They can be within certain time zones, and can be directed at specific types of vehicles
Intersection and give way rules
Road user directions
These are restrictions and directions for different groups of road users and include transit lanes, bus lanes, cycle lanes, etc
